First, complete the activity on the Jamboard. Jamboard Activity
The Jamboard Activity is where you discuss your book. Answer the questions. There are three total slides. The slide bar is at the top. Click on the square post it note on the left side of the Jamboard and answer the questions based on your book.
Jamboard is no longer supported by Google, so this activity could be duped.
Second, how would you change this activity so that it looks the same and asks the students to do the same thing, but not on Jamboard? (this is the question you answer on this blog post in the comments.)
Respond to two classmates comments on the blog post only. No need to respond on the Jamboard.

in my literacy class, we are reading "Speak" by Laurie Anderson
ReplyDeletein the chapter I read, the main character has been going through a state of depression and as a result has been skipping her classes. her only friend turns on her and distances herself from her and told her "when you are done with this being depressed phase", she will be happy to be her friend then. the main character calls her out for not being a true friend.
Your book sounds good. I like that your book's character states that her friend will come back to her once she gets out of her depression episode or phase. I think it would be hard to support all of our friends' emotions, but also be in your own emotions.
DeleteI think this activity is guided, which gives the ability to give more specific answers about parts of our books. The thing I would change is more long form answers. I had more I could write out but being limited to the sticky note made me shorten up the answer. Maybe I could have kept writing, but the sticky note turned red when I went over the characters. Another thing I would add would be posing a question of what do you think about your book so far? This would give us a chance to state our opinion on what we think so far and how we are engaging with the book
ReplyDeleteI wanted to write more as well! I also think that limiting the amount you can write makes you rethink a lot. It makes you think harder on what is the most important information I want everyone else to know right now in as few sentences as possible. I think this is just as good and even more challenging than just being able to write everything my brain thinks.
DeleteI didn't fully read the question, the way I would change it would be to do small group discussions with the same questions. Each student would be responsible for providing answers about their groups books.
DeleteHi Marc,
DeleteI agree with you. A longer response space would have been nice because I also had a lot more to say about reading to answer the question than what was provided. On the otherhand, I think having a limited amount of space to provide a response could be benefical because it requires you to consider what you are answering and limit how you are going to respond.
I really liked the idea of using a platform like this. We had something like this in my new teacher training and it was full of great tips and knowledge from new teachers, five year teachers, and 20 year teachers. I think using something like this with your students would engage them a lot. They would be able to read others' thoughts and ideas in a way where they may feel more comfortable in rather than verbalizing anything. You could also do this with actual sticky notes. For example, if you were introducing a new concept or new vocabulary, they could write their inferences on the meanings and post them to look at and make connections to.
ReplyDeleteI really like that it is anonymous too. That adds a lot to building the kids confidence to being able to articulate their opinions without judgment. I think you could have different colors be different questions then it'd be easier to distinguish the answers
DeleteYes, I also like the idea of doing this with sticky notes! It would totally be a great way and engaging to introduce a new concept and vocabulary.
DeleteI also did something similar to this in one of my new teacher meetings. We had to write down a definition of something on a sticky and then go stick it in the 'parking lot."
So, in this week's SSR time, I continued reading "It Ends With Us" by Colleen Hoover. I am still not that very far into the book where too much is happening yet. Lily and I found out the guy she encountered on the roof name is Ryle. They continue to talk about Lily telling Ryle that she despises her whole name, Lily Blossom Bloom. Her middle name is her mother's maiden name, and her parents thought it was fate that brought them together with synonymous last names. Ryle asks her to share something about herself to make him feel better about himself. Lily shares that her father was abusive, not to her but to her mother, and for that, she had a lot of hatred for him. Lily admitted that growing up, she actually looked forward to nights her parents would fight because that would mean the next 2 weeks would be great. Ryle told her that "there is no such thing as bad people. We're all just people who sometimes do bad things." He began to share something bad in his life, but then our SST time was over.
ReplyDeleteWowza, I gotta say that I was not expecting to get sucked into what you are reading. I definitely am at the edge of my seat waiting to hear more about what comes about between Lily and Ryle. Rooftop lovers possibly? or is Ryle just another man like Lily's father and will hurt her in the future? I gotta know, so please continue to read it and report back.

Hello everyone,
ReplyDeleteI thought the use of Jamboard to be similar to Quick Writes and it was really simple to mannuver. However, I would have liked a feature to have put my name on my sticky note rather than sacrificing letter space for the sticky note. The limit space of the "sticky note" did provide me the understanding that I had to be precise with what I wanted to say in order to answer the question for the slide. I do think that if the space for "sticky note" reply is to be limited, then the questions for said sticky note should be short and simple. To not have a long and winded question because I wanted to answer in detail but to do that, I would have had to do a whole another "sticky note" to answer the one question at the top of the slide.
Because of the that, I think I would try to make those changes if possible or just use it as an in person activity.

Niki, I had the same thought about using the Jamboard to be similar to Quick Writes. I think the use of sticky notes or posts it would make a good alternative to the Jamboard. I agree with you that this would be a good in-person activity too.
